Cancer Detection in Dense Breast Tissue
Dense breasts are an independent risk factor for breast cancer
Women with extremely dense breasts may be up to 4–6 times more likely to develop breast cancer than women with low density.
Dense breast tissue can “mask” tumors on a mammogram, reducing detection rates significantly. Breast Ultrasound should be used in conjunction with mammography.
On a mammogram, fatty breast tissue appears dark, making tumors (white areas) easier to see. In dense breasts, both normal tissue and tumors look white, which can hide cancers and make them harder to detect.
